Original Watercolor in Process by Colleen Sanchez

Full sheet watercolor in process
30 x 22

This summer I'll be working on several full sheet watercolor paintings as well as some small oil studies, so I can continue working on the goals I set for myself. I'm taking a break from the watercolor mini paintings, but plan to resume them again sometime in September.

This watercolor painting of white gingers in process is a nice big one 30 x 22. Like the large one I did recently "White Rainbows", this new one is another challenge of painting whites. It will probably be a little more subtle given that I had these flowers inside my home and set up more like a still life. I'm leaving my focal point to the very last so I can balance it with the background leaves and all the ginger blossoms. To make sure I get the colors and grey shades right, I'm playing with lots of little test swatches, but still working with dropping in colors. Sometimes the whole process of painting is so enjoyable I don't want to finish too fast. Sort of like a delicious gourmet meal - you don't want it to end.
Still, I need to keep working and will post the finished results soon.

  2. The various grays you have so far are fabulous, so soft and fluid-looking. I really look forward to seeing the completed painting, and admire you for doing this on a full sheet!

    1. Thanks Kathryn. It is a little intimidating to work large, but once I get one started I just love it.

  3. This is going to be a stunner, Colleen. The design is strong and I know your skill as a painter will bring it all together perfectly. I understand what you mean about relishing the process like a gourmet meal. Egg tempera is like that for me.
